The brightest natural satellites that exists visible to man is Earth’s moon. It has been there for thousands of years helping humans to navigate the earth by providing natural light. The world’s moon is the 5th largest moon in our solar system and the only body outside planet Earth that man has set foot on. Initially, residents of Earth thought there was only one moon in an entire solar system until Galileo discovered Jupiter’s four moons in 1610. Galileo’s discovery opened up more time to discover how many moons are out there in the solar system. Jupiter has over 90 known moons, Mars 7 moons, and Neptune 30 moons.
As the moon is the only place ever visited by man, it has created a lot of curiosity where space agencies want to explore more. The first mission to the moon took place in 1959 by formerly the Soviet Union where it sent its first spaceship to study this natural satellite. Luna one arrived at the moon after 48 hours of traveling through space then sent back images showing how it is. From there, United States space agency NASA sent the Apollo 1 crew to space making a successful landing. Apollo 1 crew could walk on its surface which had never been done before.
Since 1967, around 24 people have walked on the moon with the last person doing so in 1975. Its surface was formed mainly by comets and asteroids landing on it. It has over 50,000 craters created by these moving objects. Additionally, it’s a place in the solar system apart from other moons with no gravity. It’s easy to float on the moon meaning explorers need heavy suits to maintain their balance while on the moon. Natural satellites are known to contain minerals in plenty and scientists are planning on how to mine different minerals available on the moon.
These natural satellites are important in many ways here on Earth. First, it’s responsible for tides that occur in oceans raising sea levels. It is also a satellite that guides humans as they navigate this planet acting as a source of light. Without the moon, there will be no stability on the planet as its presence maintains stability. NASA has three satellites orbiting around the moon to study further information on how it was formed, dangers, as well as if it’ll be possible to allow humans to live there. They include Lunar Reconnaissance Orbitor and surveyor 1 bringing information about the moon.
Eclipses are usually brought about by the position of the moon in space. The moon has two eclipses which are partial lunar eclipse and total lunar eclipse. Total eclipse forms when Earth is between the sun and the moon while a partial eclipse results from Earth’s shadow covers the moon. When an eclipse occurs, its surface appears reddish because it’s not reflecting light directly. Other moons are still being studied because this is not the largest moon Ganymede which is Jupiter’s moon is largely creating a lot of interest from scientists.
